Elder Abuse

What Is Elder Abuse?

In 2002, the World Health Organization defined abuse and neglect of older adults as:

“...single or repeated acts, or lack of appropriate action, occurring within a relationship where there is an expectation of trust, which causes harm or distress to an older person.”

Most Canadian research indicates that between 2% and 10% of older adults experience one or more forms of abuse or neglect at some point in their later years from someone they trust or rely on.  (Statistics Canada)

elder-abuseElder abuse involves doing something that causes harm or distress to an older person. Elder abuse also includes not doing something (inaction) that the person has a duty to do, such as not providing medications/other essentials of life to an older adult who needs them.

Abuse of older adults usually occurs in relationships where there is an expectation of trust.

Not all abuse is individual actions and not all abuse occurs in a personal relationship. Some abusers actively seek out people that they think will be easier to exploit.
