Caregiving and the Workplace

caregiving-in-the-workplaceCaregiving costs Corporate North America over $30 billion a year!

When an employee is involved in caregiving for an elderly or disabled family member, employers bear a portion of the cost in terms of absenteeism, workplace interruption, productivity and hiring replacement workers.

All told, caregiving costs North American businesses as much as $30 billion a year, according to a MetLife Study of Employer Costs for Working Caregivers conducted by the National Alliance for Care giving (NAC).

This study is a real eye opener around the costs to business of caregiving. If you're an employer I'd highly recommend reviewing this 8-page report: View the report here.

There are 14.4 million full and part-time North Americans who are balancing work with caregiving roles. One in four households is involved in caregiving,. Tthe average caregiver is a 46-year-old working woman.

The study found that full-time employees involved in the most intense level of caregiving cost their employers about $11.4 billion a year in lost productivity costs. This cost jumps to about $30 billion when part-time employees are considered in the tally.

Many Corporations are recognizing the increased demand and stress being placed on employees who have to care give for their older loved ones.

Enlightened organizations are beginning to respond by providing support programs for their employees and by underwriting part or all of the costs associated with supportive care and caregiver coaching services.

As a result, the Corporation is viewed as being a concerned and caring employer by their employees and as a desirable place to work by employees of their competitors. In a pragmatic sense the corporate sector saves huge amounts of money due to time lost and poor productivity.

"Like so many people today, I'm time impoverished, torn between my job and home life and couldn't manage things with my Dad the way they needed to be handled. Mary Lou took the entire burden away from my family, telling us what to do and how to do it. I could write a book on the many ways she’s helped us!"
